The Stretch property indicates how to size the image. The value None says that we want the image to be rendered at its natural size. The Image element s default behavior is to resize the bitmap so that it fills the layout slot, but that s not always appropriate. This particular image happens to be a screenshot, and those tend to go a bit blurry if you resize them, so disabling stretching is a good idea here. Resizing is less problematic for photographs, though, so the default behavior of stretching to fit is useful there. The Image class is a user interface element, deriving from FrameworkElement like any other. But there s also ImageBrush this derives from a different class, Brush, in common with the gradient brushes we saw earlier. You can use an ImageBrush to paint a shape. Example 20-14 uses the same image to provide the Fill of a Path. (Again, you may find that the image appears only at runtime, not at design time.)

optionname=value Here, optionname is the name of the option that can be used in the section and value is the value to be used on this option. For example, if you don t want the root user to login using GDM, you can change the AllowRoot option in the [security] section, like this: AllowRoot=false Every time you change an option in the custom.conf file, you have to restart the X server using Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or, if you prefer, reboot the whole system. There are other options that you can use in your custom.conf file and you can read them in the defaults.conf file on the /usr/share/gdm directory.

You don t have to download images with HTTP. You can compile an image into a WPF or Silverlight application as a resource simply adding a JPEG or PNG to the project in Visual Studio will do that. Or with WPF you can point an Image or ImageBrush at a file on disk.

Silverlight supports only JPEG and PNG bitmaps to keep the Silverlight plug-in download small, Microsoft chose a minimal set of formats, and these two cover most bases. JPEG provides efficient compression for photographic and photorealistic images, but does a bad job with screenshots and doesn t support transparency. Conversely, PNG can reproduce screenshots perfectly and supports transparency, but compresses photographic images inefficiently. WPF supports a much wider range of image types, including TIFF, BMP, and GIF. Moreover, it s built on top of the extensible Windows Imaging Components (WIC) mechanism, so the set of supported formats is not closed. Some digital camera vendors provide WIC drivers for their native raw image formats, so if you have those installed, WPF can display those images directly.

If you changed some of the options in the custom.conf file, rebooting can be time-consuming. Instead, you can reload selected options from the file, and they will be used by GDM just as if you rebooted the system. To do this, use gdmflexiserver, a tool for reloading options for GDM to use in the current X session. The gdmflexiserver uses the following syntax: gdmflexiserver --command= UPDATE_CONFIG targetsection/targetoption Here, targetsection is the section in custom.conf that the targetoption you just changed belongs to. For example, if you want to let the root user get into the remote X session, you change the AllowRoot option within the [security] section, like this: AllowRoot=true Now save the file. Then, instead of rebooting the system to let GDM know about this new rule, run gdmflexiserver at the shell prompt, like this: gdmflexiserver --command= UPDATE_CONFIG security/AllowRoot This tells GDM what option has been changed and what section it belongs to. Here, AllowRoot belongs to the security section and security/AllowRoot is the proper way to tell gdmflexiserver about that update. If you make a mistake on your custom.conf file, such as having a keyword misspelled, gdmflexiserver will not warn you about it. The gdmflexiserver command will ignore that misspelled option and load the valid ones. Make sure to review the contents of your custom.conf file in case something is not working as expected.

We can start out with the simplest possible class. It will have no methods, and no data, so as a model of a plane in our system, it leaves something to be desired, but it gets us started. If you want to build your own version as you read, create a new Console Application project just as we did in 2. To add a new class, use the Project Add Class menu item (or right-click on the project in the Solution Explorer and select Add Class). It ll add a new file for the class, and if we call it Plane.cs, Visual Studio will create a new source file with the usual using directives and namespace declaration. And most importantly, the file will contain a new, empty class definition, as shown in Example 3-1.
